Black Forest from Strasbourg: Titisee, Triberg and Freiburg in one day?
4 min read
The answer first. The Black Forest day trip is the offer to look at: it starts and ends at Strasbourg station, takes nine hours and visits three places in Germany. Expect a lot of time in the van. The drives add up to 70, 40, 30 and 70 minutes, which is three and a half hours of the nine.
The day, as the page describes it
The tour leaves from Place de la Gare in Strasbourg and returns there. Its stops, in the order the page lists them:
- Triberg, 1 hour 20 on site. The page calls it the capital of cuckoo clocks and says the waterfalls are the tallest in Germany. The Parc des Cascades has an admission of €9 per adult, paid extra, and this is not part of the price.
- Titisee, 1.5 hours with lunch and free time. The page mentions a lakeside stroll. Lunch is not included; the page points to the restaurants and terraces by the lake.
- Freiburg, 2.5 hours, with a guided visit, free time and shopping.
Triberg and Freiburg have guided visits, Titisee is free time and a self-guided tour. Each stop is short, so read it as a sampler, not as a deep visit.
Facts to check before you book
It costs €124 per person, is rated 4.8/5 from 163 reviews, and takes up to 8 people with a guide who speaks French, English, Spanish or German. Free cancellation runs until 24 hours before. It leaves at 8:30 and is back between 18:00 and 18:30, depending on traffic. Bring a passport or ID card, as the day is spent in Germany. The page says the vehicle is not suitable for people with reduced mobility and lists children under 6 as not suitable. Anything not named under “what’s included” is extra.
Is it worth the day?
It suits you if you have already seen Strasbourg and want a change of scenery without driving in a foreign country. It is a poor choice if you dislike long drives or want to stay in a place. If you would rather see more of Alsace, the Colmar guide and the wine route guide cover shorter days.
By car
With your own car you set the pace, but the trip crosses a border. If you compare rental cars for Strasbourg, check the cross-border terms on the supplier’s page. Timetables for a train to Freiburg are on SNCF Connect and the Deutsche Bahn site.
Our recommendation
Book it for a full day of scenery with three stops and no driving of your own. Choose Alsace instead if you want fewer hours on the road. More day trips are under Alsace day trips from Strasbourg.
