Eating in Strasbourg: five food tours compared, from a 2-hour tasting to a full choucroute meal
5 min read
The answer first. Choose by how much you want to eat. The 3.5-hour food walking tour is the longest, and its page describes a complete meal with drinks. The gourmet tour for six people also describes a full meal, and the rest are tastings or a street food walk of two to three hours.
The five tours
- Full meal. The traditional food walking tour costs €89.10 per person and lasts 3.5 hours. It starts at Place d’Austerlitz and has four or more stops: charcuterie with soft bretzels and cheese, then choucroute garnie, a glass of Alsatian wine, and gingerbread or a Kugelhopf or tarte flambée to finish, depending on the season. Water, wine or soft drinks are included, with one glass of wine. It runs in English and French and is rated 4.8/5 from 277 reviews. Vegetarian and other diets are supported if you say so when booking. The page lists people with mobility impairments as not suitable.
- Five tastings, six people. The gourmet food tour takes 3 hours for €96, with up to 6 people and a guide who speaks French, German and English. It includes a one-hour walk of about 3 km, five stops with tastings and drinks (beer, wine, soft drinks) and a mix of seated and take-away stops. The tastings include meat and dairy. The page lists wheelchair users, vegans and people with diabetes, food or nut allergies, or gluten or lactose intolerance as not suitable.
- Two hours, for foodies. The culinary tour costs €55, starts at Place de la République and is limited to 6 people. It promises at least three tastings, plus a guided walk of about an hour and a half that takes in the Ponts Couverts. The guide speaks English, French, German or Portuguese. People with food or nut allergies or lactose intolerance are listed as not suitable.
- Market days. The 2-hour gourmet walking tour is the one to plan around the calendar: it is set on market days, Wednesday and Friday. It starts at the cathedral, runs in English for up to 8 people, includes three tasting sessions in local shops and costs €70. Wheelchair users are listed as not suitable, and you are asked to bring ID. The page says it is for adults only, from 18, and runs only with at least two adults.
- Street food, with a private option. The 3-hour street food tour starts at 5 Rue des Bouchers, costs €77, and the guide speaks English, French, Spanish or Italian. The page names tarte flambée and choucroute garnie and has a private option. It has few reviews so far.
What to check before you book
Whether a tour counts as lunch is the question that decides most of these. Two pages describe a full meal, the 3.5-hour tour and the gourmet tour. For the others, treat the tasting as a snack, and read the page to see what is included. Group size also differs: 6 for two of them, 8 for the market-day tour.
Our recommendation
Book the 3.5-hour tour if you want dinner or lunch covered and are happy with English or French. Take the two-hour culinary tour if you have less time, and the market-day tour only if Wednesday or Friday suits your trip and everyone in your group is 18 or over. All of them walk the old town, so you also see it on the way. For tours without food, see Strasbourg walking tours, and for more choice food and wine tours.
